Top 20 Mountains from Around the World

Mount Everest (Chomolungma)

The World's Highest Peak, Himalayas, Tibet

No collection of mountain images could be complete without the mighty Everest orChomolungma. Who has not heard of this most famous of mountains, the highest in the world?

Everest and the rest of the Himalaya peaks grow by a few centimetres each year as the tectonic plates of our planet shift. Mount Everest itself is an incredible 29,028 feet high (8,848 metres). The first successful ascent was made in 1953. In 2005, a couple were married on the summit. The youngest climber to date to reach the summit was 15 years old.

The extraordinary Austrian Stefan Gatt made the ascent without oxygen and was the first climber to snowboard down from Everest's summit.

Rocky Mountains (Banff National Park)

Canadian Rockies

The Banff National Park of Canada was one of the first national parks in the world. It is located in Alberta and covers over 2,500 square miles.

The poster shows Moraine Lake against a mountain backdrop, in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. This chain of 10 mountain peaks, all above 10,000 feet (3,000 metres), is one of the world's loveliest mountain views.

Coast Range, British Columbia

Canadian Mountains

This beautiful mountain poster shows Mount Combatant, which is found in the Coast Range of British Columbia. This range marks the border between British Columbia and Alaska, and so separates Canada and the northernmost state of the USA.

Mount Combatant, at over 12,000 feet, is one of the highest peaks in an area of the Coast Range known as the Mount Waddington Range. This is challenging territory for mountain climbers, but the magnificent vista is surely reward for their efforts.

This mountain poster shows one such mountain climber standing on a precarious-looking ridge, far from the cares and troubles of daily life.

Valley of the Ten Peaks

Canadian Mountains

If you are thinking this mountain view looks familiar, it is because you already saw it above! However, when a view is this good, it is worth showing it in a different light (quite literally!).

Here the Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park is bathed in a beautiful golden glow, this stunning photograph its title of 'Rocky Mountain Gold'.

The change of light has also changed the lake from a milky turquoise to a more crystalline color. This is one you wish you could walk right into!

Mount Rainier

Washington, USA

What is as lovely as a snow-covered mountain landscape?

This poster shows the majestic Mount Rainier, a peak in a National Park of the same name in Washington state. The area is popular with mountain climbers and winter sports fans alike.

Mount Rainier is a giant at 14,410 feet and has an amazing 41 glaciers. The Mount has 3 separately named peaks: the summit Columbia Crest, plus Liberty Cap and Point Success.

Grand Teton, Wyoming

The Rocky Mountain Range in the United States

Grand Teton needs no introduction for many. This is another peak which shares its name with the National Park in which it is situated.

Grand Teton is 13770 feet high, but despite its fame, it is only the second tallest mountain in Wyoming. It is nonetheless beautiful and loved by many, including of course mountain climbers.

This lovely Grand Teton poster shows the Teton Range and captures the mirror effect of the lake reflecting the mauve of the peaks and the gently-clouded sky.

South America
Summit of Nevadao Quitaraju

Peruvian Andes, South America

The Cordillera Blanca Range is found in Peru and is part of the Andes of South America.

The summit pictured is just one of the peaks of this range, of which many are taller than 18,000 feet (5,500 metres) and the highest is an impressive 22,200 feet (6,768 metres).

Quitaraju's summit is only a little under 20,000 feet (just over 6,000 metres). The mountain climber here must be feeling like they are on top of the world!

Egger Peaks, Patagonia

South American Mountains

These jagged mountain peaks are found in Patagonia in South America, where they are known as the Egger Peaks.

Toni Egger was the Austrian Ice Climber who allegedly made the first ascent of Cerro Torre alongside Italian climber Cesare Maestri (although their claim has been hotly debated). Egger did not make it back, although Maestri survived.

There are four peaks in this range, with Cerro Torre the highest at 10,280 feet (3,128 metres). Weather conditions and ice on the peak make it a true challenge for mountaineers.

Machu Picchu in Andes

South American Mountain Range

The llama in this poster is used to high-altitude living!

The famous site of Machu Picchu in Peru is located at 8,000 feet and was a fortress city of the Inca. It is more than 500 years old. The ancient mountain citadel is nestled between two peaks of the Andes.

Europe

The European Alps

Mountain Biker in the Alps Mountains

This wonderful mountain poster shows a typically breathtaking Alpine backdrop for this mountain

The Alps stretch between a number of European countries. The tallest Alp, Mont Blanc, is found in France. But it is Switzerland and Austria that many people think of when they imagine Alpine scenery with snow-covered peaks and mirror lakes.

Where better to get away from it all than among the peaks of the Alps?

Austrian Alps

The Alps Mountain Range, Austria

This is a balloon flight with a difference! Can you imagine that glorious alpine vista from above?

These ballooners are taking a trip over the Austrian Alps, of which the highest peak is the Grossglockner.

Austria is home to the spectacular Tyrol (or Tirol) region of the Alps, and was also the setting for Julie Andrews' adventures as Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. Had she ventured into the winter wonderland pictured, she would have needed a good pair of skis!

The Swiss Alps

Alpine Mountain Range, Switzerland

This mountain poster shows the Swiss Alps. The Bernese Oberland region which is shown in this photograph is located at the heart of Switzerland and includes the dramatic trio of peaks formed by the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains.

This train is travelling the Jungfrau railway which takes visitors up the Jungfraujoch, Europe's highest railway station! I have visited it myself, and love this part of the Alps.

The Alpine flowers are a glorious sight in Spring and Summer, as can be glimpsed in this mountain poster. This poster would be a lovely souvenir for any stay in the Alps.

The Scottish Highlands

Mountains in Scotland

I currently call Scotland 'home' but it only takes a drive into the Highlands to remind me how beautiful the Scottish landscape can be.

The scenery is stunning in this part of the world, where lochs are found beside time-worn peaks, usually under a brooding sky. In fact, the Highlands are so ancient and weathered that they appear gently rounded rather than jagged like newer mountain ranges.

The highest mountain in Scotland is Ben Nevis. Several mountain areas in Scotland are suitable for winter sports, and the Scottish mountains also offer refuge to some rare wildlife.

Norwegian Mountain Scenery

Norway, Scandinavia

Like the lochs of Scotland, the fjords of Norway are world-famous. However, they would not exist without the mountain peaks and valleys of the Norwegian landscape.

This makes Norway a wonderful destination for climbers, hikers and all winter sport enthusiasts.

The classic view in this poster shows the natural beauty of this landscape, where small red-walled houses line the shore of a fjord, and magnificent peaks provide a dramatic backdrop.
South Africa

Table Mountain

South Africa's most famous Mountain

Table Mountain is not only the most famous mountain in South Africa, but one of the most famous in the world.

The mountain is readily accessible to visitors by means of a cable car, or hikers can take a variety of routes to explore the mountain.

Table Mountain is always striking, but this is the loveliest post of it I have found, with the wonderful purple light and the time-lapse capture of the waves.

Asia

Ama Dablam Mountain, Himalaya

Beautiful Mountain in Nepal

If you want an exotic mountain scene, this dramatic mountain poster could be just the one for you.

Ama Dablam Mountain is located in Nepal, in the might Himalaya range. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountains in the world and is on the must-climb list of many mountaineers. At 22,501 feet (6858 metres) high, it is a true giant. Those who reach the summit are rewarded with spectacular views of Everest.

Of course, for many of us, a beautiful poster such as this one showing Ama Dablam veiled by cloud will be as close as we get!

Lingtrin (or Lingtren) in the Himalaya

Tibetan Himalayas

This classic peak is sometimes spelled Lingtrin but more usually as Lingtren. It is a little over a gigantic 22,000 feet high.

It is found to the west of Everest, and the only ascent claimed is an illegal (and therefore unofficial one) made by Dutchman Bart Vos.

This image shows the beautiful triangular peak with the crescent moon.

Japan

Mount Fuji

Japan's most famous Mountain

Mount Fuji in Japan looks as if it were painted by the brush of a skilled artist. And indeed it has been painted many times over the Japanese artists and visitors alike.

The mountain is a volcano, 12,388 feet high (3776 metres). Each summer hundreds of hikers climb to the summit.

This poster of Mount Fuji shows the snow-capped peak behind Lake Kawaguchi, and with the pink blossom branches so reminiscent of Japan in the foreground.

New Zealand

Mount Cook (Aoraki)

Southern Alps Mountains, New Zealand

The diverse landscapes of New Zealand formed the backdrop for Middle Earth in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. This country really does have it all, including the impressive Southern Alps mountain range.

The highest peak in the Southern Alps is Mount Cook at 12,316 feet (3,754 metres). It is located in a National Park of the same name.

The poster shows the road leading to this fantastic mountain scene.

Mount Cook National Park

Beautiful Mountain Region in New Zealand

With this final poster of the world's greatest mountain views, we move from the approach to a position among the peaks of the Mount Cook (Aoraki) National Park.

Who among us hasn't sat at a desk and longed to be free in glorious solitude, like the climber on the rocky outcrop here?

Mountains represent the ultimate escape. But for the times when we can't be among them, we only need an image such as this to spark our dreams.
